How to Make a Website for Girls
Creating a website for girls is entirely different than creating one for boys or adults. One needs only to look at popular magazines to see the wide gap in design and interests between girls and boys. According to a Pew Internet study, girls ages 15 to 17 "are more likely to use email, text messaging, search for information about prospective schools, seek health and religious information, and visit entertainment-related websites." This is information you should take into consideration when creating a website for girls, especially the older set.
Decide exactly what demographic you will target with your website. What age group do you want to target? What part of the economic spectrum? If you are creating a site to make money, the ad space you sell and products you promote will be affected by your choice. Do not try to make a site for all girls. Trying to please everyone will end up pleasing no one. Create a unique site.
Choose a theme for your site. Will your site be about beauty? Teenage health? Crafts? Clearly define your website so that girls know what to expect once they are there. Everything you do to build your site should be done with your theme in mind.
Choose a girl-friendly name for your site and incorporate it into your URL. Clearly indicating that your site is for girls will help you to attract your target audience. Make sure that your URL is short and easy to spell to help young visitors return to your site.
Design the website to appeal to girls. Use colors that are popular with girls--- bold pinks, oranges and turquoise are good choices, as are soft pastels. For more design inspiration, look at current fashion color trends. Incorporate drawings and photos to match the theme of your site. Use a bigger font than you would for adults. Do not design a minimalist site. That's best left for Danish designers.
Incorporate interactive activities into your site. Quizzes and polls are popular with teenage girls. Interactive question-and- answer pages will appeal to girls who enjoy giving and receiving advice. If possible, hire an expert to give advice on your site if you decide to incorporate that feature.
Offer contests on a regular basis with prizes that a girl would enjoy winning. This is an excellent way to keep girls coming back to your site repeatedly. The best contests give the best chance of winning to individuals who submit entries daily. Irresistible prizes are designer purses, make-up, jewelry and gift certificates to clothing stores. There are many other prizes you can offer as well. Make the prize fit the theme of your website if at all possible.
